On September 25, 2010 a 15-year-old girl was brutally murdered on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Mackie Park in North Delta while on her way to watch a soccer game. That young girl was Laura Szendrei. This murder completely horrified and terrified the community of North Delta. In the aftermath of the tragic and senseless death of Laura a group of concerned citizens got together and formed a committee. This committee successfully organized the first annual ‘Laura Szendrei Memorial 5 & 10K Walk, Run and Roll” on April 10, 2011; the ultimate goal of the committee is to raise funds to support an annual scholarship(s) to be awarded to qualifying Delta students and to advance education by providing scholarships within the Delta School Disctrict.
During the planning process last year Derek Woo, a Business student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, approached the committee hoping to assist us with securing and setting up our first scholarship with Kwantlen. The LS Walk Run & Roll was an overwhelming success and raised enough money to set up a life time scholarship in Laura’s name at Kwantlen exclusively for Delta Secondary students thanks in part to Derek and Advancement Officer at Kwantlen, Debbie Mellenger’s help.
The committee has also been involved in the funding and building of the Laura Szendrei Memorial Garden at Burnsview Secondary. The garden will serve in part as an education tool for the school in both environmental studies as well as the culinary program.
Over the course of the past year the Committee has organized other fundraising events, with all proceeds going to the Foundation, with the idea in mind to expolore the possiblity of partnering with educational institutes such as Douglas College and BCIT to establish additional scholarships.
Our great success has been due to the commitment of the Committee members and the amazing support and participation in the Event of our communities and our partnerships with the business communities in both Delta and Surrey.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support. This Event and our success would not be possible without you. Working together we are making a difference.
